Jackson Hole
Tread on the Trail
The Challenge
As the number of hikers increased around Jackson Hole, trail etiquette was on the decline. As visitors wander off the beaten path, it causes damage to the environment that compounds for years.
More signage would only disrupt the natural beauty. The Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board knew it was time to put their foot down to get hikers to stay on the trail.
The Approach
We created “Tread on the Trail”, a hiking boot that imprints a reminder to stay on the trail with every single step. The message isn’t on a sign blocking the stunning landscape, it’s printed on the ground, the exact spot where people decide to go off the trail.
We developed a working prototype and debuted it on the trails at Jackson Hole. We turned a simple rule to follow into a movement to follow, all in pursuit of protecting 2.6 million acres of public land, one step at a time.
