Planned Parenthood
What Planned Parenthood Makes Possible
The Challenge
Planned Parenthood needed a film that could reflect the real impact of their care through real stories.
The film required weaving 18 different community stories into a single piece visually and emotionally cohesive, all captured within a single day of production.
The Approach
I led the creative and directed a mini-doc centered on voices across the Planned Parenthood community, interviewing over 20 patients, staff, and volunteers in a single day. We kept the crew small and built space in the schedule for both the larger group and for each interview subject to get comfortable and build trust.
The visual approach was intentionally minimal and bright. We used soft natural light and an airy environment to create a sense of ease and openness. The goal was to keep the tone human and stripped back rather than clinical or overly produced.
To ensure the interviews felt grounded, conversational, and intimate we used an interrotron interview set up. We knew early on, this would be especially important as many of the stories ventured into heavier, more sensitive topics. For me, it was crucial when the person looked up from sharing a deeply personal experience, they were seeing a human being on the other end of the conversation, not a machine.
Throughout production and into post, we took time, reverence, and care while bringing all the stories together to show truly, what Planned Parenthood makes possible for all of us.
